Xinshi

Xinshi ( Chinese  新 市區 , Pinyin Xīnshì Qū , Tongyong Pinyin Sinshìh Cyu , W.-G. Hsin 1 -shih 4 Ch'ü 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Sin-chhī-khu ) is a district of the government-immediate city of Tainan in Southwest of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Xinshi is located relatively centrally in the urban area of Tainan and has the shape of a lying rectangle with sides 5 × 15 km. The neighboring districts are (clockwise): Anding , Shanhua , Shanshang , Xinhua , Yongkang and Annan (the latter only over a very short section). Xinshi is located on the Jianan Plain , an extensive, intensively agricultural alluvial plain in southwestern Taiwan. The topography is accordingly flat with no major elevations.

history

After the Republic of China took over the island of Taiwan in 1945, Xinshi was established as a rural community in the newly formed Tainan County . In July 1946, the villages of Tanding and Dashe, which had previously belonged to the neighboring community of Shanshang, were annexed to Xinshi. On December 25, 2010, Tainan County was fully incorporated into Tainan City. The previous district communities were given the status of urban districts ( , ).

population

With a population of about 37,000 (2019), Xinshi is one of the urban districts with a medium population. In contrast to many other rural communities or districts in Taiwan, the population of Xinshi has not decreased but increased in the last few decades (since 1980). The reason for this lies in the proximity to the core city of Tainan and in the fact that some industries and the South Taiwan Science Park that offer jobs have settled here in previous years.

The proportion of indigenous people in Xinshi is very low (less than 0.5%).

Junction of National Roads 1 and 8 in Xinshi ( )World icon

Xinshi has been intensively developed in terms of sales. On the west and east edge of the district, the national roads (motorways) 1 and 3 run in north-south direction, both of which are crossed by national road 8, which runs in west-east direction. On larger roads, provincial roads 19A (19 ) also run in a north-south direction and provincial road 1 (from northeast to southwest) through Xinshi.

The longitudinal line of the Taiwanese Railway with the two stations Nanke ( 南科 車站 ) and Xinshi ( 新市 車站 ) also runs through Xinshi . In a dead straight north-south direction, Xinshi is also crossed by the Taiwanese high-speed railway, Taiwan High Speed Rail , which, however, has no stop here.

Agriculture

As an agricultural specialty of Xinshi are "white Java apples" ( 白蓮 霧 , Báilián wù , English white wax apple ), ie a Java apple variety not with the usual red, but a greenish-white skin, which also has a different taste. The city district administration endeavors to market this fruit as a local specialty and to promote its cultivation. Other agricultural products are tomatoes, pineapples (harvest March to May: "golden diamond pineapple" 金鑽 鳳梨 ; April to July: "sweet honey pineapple" 甜蜜 蜜 鳳梨 ), watermelons, burdock ( 牛蒡 , Niúbàng , a vegetable) and edamame ( soybeans harvested immature).

In recent times, promising attempts at culture have been made with coffee ( 新市 平地 咖啡  - “Xinshi Pingdi coffee”) and tea ( 白蓮 霧 茶 , Bái Liánwù Chá  - “white Java apple tea”).

Special features and tourist destinations

In Xinshi there are some smaller temples, for example the Yong'an Temple ( 永安 宮 ) of the goddess Mazu and the Taoist Xixing Bejidian ( 西 興 北極 殿 ) and Dongshi Bejidian ( 東 勢 北極 殿 ) and others. a. m. Since 1995, part of the South Taiwan Science Park ( 南部 科學 工業 園區 ) has been built in Xinshi according to government plans. The aim was to transfer the high-tech industries (semiconductors, etc.), which are mainly concentrated in the north of Taiwan (especially in the vicinity of Hsinchu), to the south. On December 26, 2018, a branch of the National Museum of Prehistoric Culture of Taiwan was opened on the grounds of the Science Park ( 國立 臺灣 史前 文化 博物館 南科 分 館  - “Southern Branch of the Taiwan National Museum of Prehistoric Culture”).
