Guanmiao

Guanmiao ( Chinese  關廟區 , Pinyin Guanmiao Qū , W.-G. Kuan 1 -miao 4 Ch'ü 1 , zhuyin ㄍ ㄨ ㄢ ㄇ ㄧ ㄠ 'ㄑ ㄩ , PEH OE jī Koan organic khu ) is a district of the government-immediate city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Guanmiao is located on the southern edge of the urban area of Tainan. The district has an elongated shape with a north-south extension of about 13.7 kilometers and an east-west extension between 2.5 and 7.3 kilometers. The neighboring districts in Tainan are Longqi in the east, Xinhua in the north and Guiren in the west. In the south, Guanmiao borders the urban area of Kaohsiung ( Alian and Tianliao districts ).

history

The first historically tangible inhabitants of the area were Austronesians from the Siraya tribe . During the reign of Zheng Chenggong , an increasing number of Han Chinese migrated from today's Anping along the Yanshui River ( 鹽水 溪 , Yánshuǐ Xī ) inland and were in some cases systematically settled there as fortified farmers. In 1718, during the reign of the Qing Emperor Kangxi , a temple, the Shanxi Tang ( 山西 堂 , Shānxī Táng ) was built here. Guan Yu was worshiped in the temple and the area eventually became known as Guandimiao Jie ( 關帝廟 街 , Guāndì Miào Jiē  - "Emperor Guan's Temple Street"). During the Japanese colonial period (1895-1945) this name was used and the administrative unit Guanmiao ( 關 廟 庄 , Chin. Guanmiao Zhuāng , Japanese. Sekibyō Shō ) in the Xinfeng district ( 新豐 郡 , Chin. Xīnfēng jùn , japan) was created. Niitoyo Gun ) in Tainan Prefecture. After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, Guanmiao was reorganized into a rural community ( , Xiāng ) in the newly established Tainan County . After the district was dissolved on December 25, 2010 and completely incorporated into the city of Tainan, Guanmiao was given the status of a city district ( , ).

population

With a little over 34,000 inhabitants (2019), Guanmiao is one of the medium-sized urban districts of Tainan in terms of population. Members of the indigenous population make up around 0.2 percent of the population (2017).

The traditional line of business is agriculture. Bamboo has been grown and processed since the Qing period . Between 1961 and 1971, Guanmiao grew to become the most important center for rattan processing and production in Taiwan. During the Japanese rule, sugar cane cultivation was strongly promoted (remnants of the old sugar railway can still be found in the district ). After 1976 this fell sharply and the sugar cane was replaced by pineapple cultivation and the production of bamboo shoots.
