Yujing

Yujing ( Chinese  玉井 區 , Pinyin Yùjǐng Qū ) is a district of the government- direct city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China in Taiwan .

Location and description

Yujing is located in the east of the urban area of Tainan. The district has approximately the shape of a triangle with sides 11 to 14 kilometers. The neighboring districts are Nanhua in the southeast, Zuozhen in the southwest, Shanshang and Danei in the west, and Nanxi in the northeast. Yujing is located in the southern section of the Alishan mountain range, which is a kind of promontory in front of the actual Taiwanese central mountains. The city center of Tainan is approximately 36 kilometers away. The terrain consists of limestone on the mostly forested mountain slopes , in the area of Sanxiangong ( 三 仙宮 , in the district of Wangming), Mangzimang ( 芒 仔 芒 , in the district of Sanhe) and Neicenglin ( 內層 林 , in the district of Cenglin) there are clay soils and otherwise sandy loam prevails . Due to its lower water-binding capacity, the latter is not well suited for growing wet rice, which is why fruit crops predominate here. The climate of Yujing is subtropical with an annual mean temperature of 23.7 ° C. The warmest month is July with an average of 28.4 ° C and the coldest month is January with an average of 16.6 ° C. history

Memorial to the Tapani incident

The first historically tangible residents of Yujing were members of the Tawan indigenous peoples of the Cau ( ) or Tapani ( 噍 吧 哖 ). During the Dutch colonial rule and the later Qing rule , the area was known as Dawulong ( 大 武 壟 ). During the Qing Dynasty, more and more Han Chinese settlers poured into Taiwan from mainland China, triggering several population movements. The Siraya were displaced by the Han from their original settlement area and in turn displaced the Cau from the area of Yujing. From the reign of Emperor Yongzheng , the Han settled more and more directly in the Yujing area. During the Japanese rule over Taiwan (1895-1945), the area was a center of the so-called Tapani incident in 1915 , a regional uprising of the local population against colonial rule that was suppressed. In 1920 the region was given the name 玉井 , in the Japanese version of the Hanzi symbol: Tamai , as this roughly corresponded to the traditional name Tapani . In Chinese transcription, the characters Yujing were pronounced, meaning "Jade Fountain". Under Japanese rule, Tamai-sho was organized as an administrative unit in Shinka-gun County ( 新化 郡 ) in Tainan Prefecture . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, Yujing was established as a rural community ( , Xiāng ) in the newly established Tainan County . With effect from December 25, 2014, the district was dissolved and fully incorporated into the city of Tainan. All district parishes, including Yujing, received the status of city districts ( , ).

population

With almost 14,000 inhabitants (2019), Yujing is one of the smaller districts of Tainan. The population density is well below the average of Tainan, which is due to the mountainous topography. The proportion of people belonging to indigenous peoples is well below 1 percent.
