Shanhua ( Chinese  善化 區 , Pinyin Shànhuà Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Siān-hoà-khu ) is a district of the government - direct city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China in Taiwan .

Location and description

Shanhua is located about 20 kilometers northeast of the historic core city of Tainan, relatively in the center of today's enlarged city of Tainan, in the Jianan Plain , a fertile, intensively agricultural alluvial plain in western Taiwan. In the north, the river Zengwen ( 曾文溪 , Céngwén Xī ), formerly Wanli ( 灣裡 溪 , Wānlǐ Xī ), flows in a large arc around the area of Shanhua.

The neighboring districts are Anding in the southwest , Madou in the northwest , Guantian in the north, Danei and Shanshang in the east , and Xinshi in the south .

history

During the Dutch colonial era , the area was known as the Backloun and was populated by the Siraya indigenous people. A mission school was established here in 1624. The later name Shanhua derives from the contraction of the terms 善 邑 , Shàn yì  - "good deeds" and 教化 , Jiào huà  - "education". At the time of the Qing rule, the area was named Wanli Jie after the nearby river. The river favored the development as it guaranteed the water supply for agriculture.

During the period of Japanese rule carried out various administrative reforms and 1920, the management unit was Shanhua Shō ( 善化庄 ) formed in 1945, after the takeover of Taiwan by the Republic of China to a township ( , Zhen ) in the newly formed Tainan County was transformed . With the incorporation of the district into the city of Tainan on December 25, 2010, Shanhua received the status of a city district ( , ).

population

With a population of just under 50,000 (2019), Shanhua is one of the Tainan districts with a medium population. The population increased in the decades between 1980 and 2010 - due to the location in the agglomeration of the core city. The proportion of members of indigenous peoples in the population was 0.5% at the end of 2017.

Special features and tourist destinations

There are a number of different smaller temples in Shanghua. Better known are the goddess of the sea Mazu consecrated Qing'an Temple ( 慶安宮 , Qing'an gōng ). The temple is said to be on the site of the former Dutch mission school. As a presumed remnant of the school there is a "Dutch well" ( 荷蘭 井 , Hélán jǐng ) in front of the temple . The beginnings of the temple go back to the reign of Kangxi (1661 to 1722). However, the temple was rebuilt several times over the years, partially demolished and rebuilt again.

In the area of the Shanhua brewery there is a small beer museum and some of the brewery can be visited. The small sugar museum provides information about the history of the sugar industry and some of the former sugar factory can also be visited.
