Nanxi ( Chinese  楠西區 , Tongyong Pinyin Nansi Cyu , W.-G. Nan 2 -hsi 1 Ch'ü 1 , PEH OE jī Lâm-se-khu ) is a district of the centrally-administered city of Tainan in the south west of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Nanxi is located on the eastern edge of the urban area of Tainan. The maximum east-west extension is about 11 kilometers and the north-south extension is 13 kilometers. The Nanxis area is located in the foothills of the Alishan Mountains . The neighboring districts in the city of Taiwan are the districts of Nanhua in the east, Yujing in the (south) west, Liujia in the northwest and Dongshan in the north. In the northeast, Nanxi is bordered by Dapu Municipality in neighboring Chiayi County .

history

The first inhabitants of the area in historical times were members of indigenous Taiwanese ethnic groups . Initially the Tsou lived here , who were later ousted by the Siraya . During the Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945) Nanxi was a center of the Tapani uprising (or Xilai uprising, 西 來 庵 事件 ), an uprising of the local population against the colonial administration. The uprising was suppressed by the Japanese army and police and killed more than 1,000 people. In 1920 there was an administrative reorganization and the village of Nanxi ( 楠西 庄 , Nánxī Zhuāng ) was re-established as an administrative unit in Xinhua County in Tainan Prefecture . After Taiwan was taken over by the Republic of China in 1945, the rural community Nanxi ( N , Nánxī Xiāng ) in the newly formed Tainan County was formed . After the county was dissolved on December 25, 2010, Nanxi became a municipality ( , ) of Tainan.

Special features, sights

The nearby Zengwen Reservoir in neighboring Dapu to the north attracts many tourists. In Nanxi is the east exit of the Wushanling water diversion tunnel ( 烏 山嶺 引水 隧道 , Wūshānlǐng Yǐnshuǐ Suìdào , ), with which water from the Zengwen River ( 曾文溪 , Céngwén Xī ) is diverted to fill the Wushantou reservoir . The original, three-kilometer-long tunnel was built between 1922 and 1929 during the Japanese rule according to plans by the hydraulic engineer Yoichi Hatta ( 八 田 與 一 ). Since the old tunnel had become dilapidated, a second tunnel was built from 2012. The Meiling ( 梅嶺 風景區 , Méilǐng Fēngjǐng Qū ) landscape in Wanqiu is particularly popular during the plum blossom period from December to January. Meiling is considered the largest plum-growing area in southern Taiwan. The Guidan Hot Springs ( 龜 丹 溫泉 , Guīdān Wēnquán , ) are the largest in Tainan. The Yongxing suspension bridge , ( 永興 吊橋 , Yǒngxìng Diàoqiáo , ), as a pedestrian bridge over the Zengwen River, connects the two districts of Zhaoxing and Nanxi. World iconWorld iconWorld icon
