Rende

Rende ( Chinese  仁德區 , Pinyin Rende Qū , W.-G. Jen 2 th 2 Ch'ü 1 , PEH OE jī Jin-tek-khu ) is a district of the centrally-administered city of Tainan in the south west of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Rende is located on the southern edge of the urban area, immediately bordering the core city of Tainan (in the borders before 2010). The district has roughly the shape of an acute-angled isosceles triangle with a base length of 8.5 kilometers and a leg length of 11.5 kilometers. The southern boundary is formed by the Erren River ( 二仁溪 , Èrrén Xī ), which in this area also forms the border to the neighboring city of Kaohsiung ( Hunei district ). The neighboring districts in Tainan are the southern district and the eastern district in the west, Yongkang in the north, and Guiren in the east. Rende lies in the area of the Jianan plain and the terrain is accordingly flat without any major elevations.

history

Before the arrival of the European colonial powers in Taiwan, the area of Rende was populated by Austronesian ethnic groups (most recently the Siraya ). In the 17th century the area came under Dutch rule , after which it was part of the Kingdom of Tunging founded by Zheng Chenggong until it fell to the Empire of China in 1683 . From the 17th century onwards, Han Chinese immigrated continuously from the mainland, who soon formed the majority of the population. After the end of the phase of Japanese colonial rule (1895-1945) Rende was a rural community ( , Xiāng ) in the 1946 newly formed district of Tainan . On December 25, 2010, the district was incorporated into the city of Tainan and Rende became a municipality ( , ).

population

Although Rende does not belong to the actual core city of Tainan, but to the communities of the former Tainan district, it is relatively heavily urbanized and belongs to the immediate vicinity of the core city. In contrast to many rural areas, the population is still growing recently (population 2010: 68,000, 2019: 76,000). The indigenous population makes up about 0.5 percent.
