Xuejia or Syuejia ( Chinese  學 甲 區 , Pinyin Xuéjiǎ Qū , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Ha̍k-kah-khu ) is a district of the government - direct city ​​of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China in Taiwan .

Location and description

Xuejia is located in the northwest of the urban area of ​​Tainan in the Jianan Plain . The northern border of the district is essentially formed by the Bazhang ( 八掌溪 , Bāzhǎng Xī ) River . In the middle runs the small river Jishui ( 急水溪 , Jíshuǐ Xī ) and the southwestern district border is mainly formed by the river Jiangjun ( 將軍 溪 , Jiāngjūn Xī ). In the past, before the rivers were regulated, Xuejia was hit by floods more frequently. The neighboring boroughs are Beimen in the west, Jiangjun in the southwest, Jiali in the south, Madou in the southeast and Xiading and Yanshui in the east. In the north, Xuejia borders on Chiayi County ( Yizhu Municipality ).

history

The first historically tangible inhabitants of the area were members of the Taiwanese indigenous people of the Siraya . After the establishment of the Kingdom of Tung Ning by Koxinga in 1661 in southern Taiwan, many immigrant Han Chinese from the coastal province of Fujian to. In the following decades the autochthonous population was either sinized or pushed further into the mountainous interior of the island. After the Sino-Japanese War of 1894/95, Taiwan became part of Japan. A series of administrative reforms took place under Japanese rule until the village of Xuejia ( 學 甲 庄 , Xuéjiǎ Zhuāng , Japan. Gakugo-ku ) in Tainan Prefecture was established in 1920 . After the end of Japanese rule and the transfer of the island of Taiwan to the Republic of China , Xuejia became a rural community ( , Xiāng ) in the newly formed district of Tainan in 1946 . In the post-war decades, the population of Xuejia increased greatly, mainly due to the textile industry located there, so that the rural community was converted into a city municipality ( , Zhèn ) on August 22, 1968 . On December 25, 2010, the county was incorporated into the city of Tainan and Xuejia became a municipality ( , ).

The population of Xuejia has been decreasing slowly for a long time (1996: 30,995 inhabitants, 2019: 25,675 inhabitants). The indigenous population makes up about 0.3 percent.

traffic

The main road link is Provincial Expressway 84, which crosses Xuejia from northwest to southeast. It is crossed in the eastern section by Provincial Road 19, which runs from northeast to southwest. The two district roads 171 and 174 run essentially in an east-west direction.

economy

Xuejia's agricultural products include rice, millet , corn, watermelon, tomatoes, beans , sugar cane, onions and garlic. Milk fish in particular are bred in aquaculture .

Special features and tourist destinations

The sights of Xuejias include several temples, including above all the Ciji Temple ( 慈濟 宮 , Cíjì Gōng , ) in the district of Cifu. Baosheng Dadi is especially venerated in the temple . According to tradition, the main statues of the temple come from an ancestral temple in the area of ​​today's Jiaomei community in what is now Longhai in Fujian Province and date back to the time of the southern Song Dynasty (1126–1279). The statues were brought to Taiwan in the time of Zheng Chenggong and the temple grew to its present size through gifts and donations from believers.
