Jiali

Jiali ( Chinese  佳里 區 , Pinyin Jiālǐ Qū , W.-G. Chia 1 -li 3 Ch'ü 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Ka-lí ) is a district of the government -immediate city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China in Taiwan .

Location and description

Jiali is located in the western part of the city, about 15 to 20 kilometers north of the historic city center of Tainan in the area of the Jianan Plain . Geologically, the terrain consists of alluvial land that has only emerged in the last few centuries. The average height above sea level is only about 5 meters and the highest point is the Beitouyang sand dune ( 北 頭 洋 沙丘 ) at 17 meters . There are several small rivers in Jiali, but they are more like drainage channels. The Zengwen River flows south of Jiali about 2 kilometers away. The neighboring counties are Qigu and Jiangjun in the west and southwest, Xuejia in the north, Madou in the east, and Xigang in the southeast.

The climate corresponds to a subtropical monsoon climate with an annual precipitation of 1200–1500 mm, which falls predominantly (up to about 80%) in the rainy season in summer (April to September), while the months of October to March are relatively dry.

history

Detailed map of Jiali from the Japanese colonial era

An older name of Jiali, handed down from the Dutch colonial times, is Soulangh , after a tribe of the Siraya indigenous people. After Zheng Chenggong came to power in southern Taiwan in 1662, many Han Chinese settlers immigrated from the mainland in the following decades , and the autochthonous population was Sinised or displaced. At the time of the Qing rule (1683-1895) Jiali belonged administratively to Zhuluo County ( 諸 羅 縣 ) in Tainan Prefecture ( 台南 府 , Táinán Fǔ , from 1886 Tainan County in Taiwan Province). After the annexation of Taiwan by Japan in 1895, the administrative structures were changed several times and from November 1, 1920 Jiali was a village ( 佳里 庄 , Jiālǐ Zhuāng , Japanese Kasato Shō ) in Beimen County ( 北 門 郡 ) in Tainan Prefecture . In 1933 it was raised from a village to a 'street' (ie urban settlement or small town, 佳里 街 , Jiālǐ Jiē or Japanese Kasato Gai ) due to population growth . After the end of the Japanese rule in 1945 and the takeover of Taiwan by the Republic of China , the administrative structures were largely taken over. The 'road' became the municipality of Jiali ( 佳 里鎮 , Jiālǐ Zhèn ) and the prefecture became the district of Tainan . On December 25, 2010, the county was completely incorporated into the city of Tainan and Jiali became a municipality ( , ).

population

With a little less than 60,000 inhabitants (2019), Jiali is in the upper third of Tainan's 37 districts in terms of population. Members of the indigenous population form only a small minority of the population (approx. 0.2%).
