Yongkang ( Chinese 永 康 區 , Pinyin Yǒngkāng Qū , W.-G. Yung-k'ang Chü ) is the most populous district of the city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China on Taiwan with about 215,000 inhabitants . Until 2010, Yongkang was an independent city in Tainan County .
location
Yongkang is located immediately east of the center of Tainan in the southern part of the Jianan Plain , the largest plain in Taiwan. Taiwan's major north-south thoroughfares, Highway 1 and the main Taiwanese railroad running through western Taiwan run through the district. The route of the Taiwan High Speed Rail touches the eastern part of Yongkang, whose Tainan station is located in the southern neighboring district of Guiren .
history
The area of today's district was already settled by Han Chinese towards the end of the Ming period . Yongkang belonged to the Kingdom of Tungning , founded by Koxinga in 1662 .
Benefiting from its convenient location and proximity to the metropolis of Tainan, the place developed into an important industrial and university location in the second half of the 20th century. From 1977 onwards, Yongkang was the largest city in Tainan County and the population continued to grow rapidly, from around 86,000 in 1983 to over 220,000 today. In 1993, when the population exceeded 150,000, Yongkang was given official city status ( Chinese 市 , Pinyin Shì ). On December 25, 2010, the entire Tainan County was incorporated into the city of Tainan, and Yongkang has had the status of a district ( 區 , Qū ) since then .
On February 6, 2016 local time, the 16-story Weiguan Jinlong Tower collapsed in Yongkang during the Kaohsiung earthquake, killing 114 people and injuring many others .
