Longqi ( Chinese  龍 崎 區 , Pinyin Lóngqí Qū , Tongyong Pinyin Lóngcí Cyu , W.-G. Lung 2 -ch'i 2 Ch'ü 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Liông-kiā-khu ) is a district of the government -immediate city of Tainan in the southwest of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Longqi is located on the southern limit of Tainan in the range of hilly terrain of Alishan Mountains . The neighboring districts are Guanmiao in the west, Xinhua in the north and Zuozhen in the northeast. To the south and southeast, Longqi borders the urban area of Kaohsiung ( Neimen and Tianliao districts ). The mean height above sea level varies between 80 and 352 meters and generally increases from west to east. The highest point is the Chuanfan ( 船帆  - "ship sails ") in the district of Longchuan. The soils in Lonqui are strongly characterized by natural erosion, are poor in nutrients, have a low water-binding capacity and are not suitable for more intensive agricultural use. The dominant form of vegetation is the mountain forest. In some places there are so-called badlands .

history

A former name of Longqi is Fanshe , which is derived from a Siraya settlement in the area of today's districts Niupu and Daping. From the 18th century and during the time of the Qing rule over Taiwan, an increasing number of Han Chinese began to immigrate to the area and gradually displaced the indigenous population. During the time of the Japanese rule (1895-1945) the village ( , Zhuāng ) Longqi (in Japanese reading: Ryusaki ) was formed by the merger of Longchuan ( 龍船 ) with Qiding ( 崎 頂 ) and this has remained the place name ever since. After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, Longqi became a rural community ( , Xiāng ) in the newly formed Tainan County . On December 25, 2014, the county was dissolved and fully incorporated into the city of Tainan. Longqi then received the status of a city district ( , ).

population

In terms of population, Longqi is the smallest of all 37 urban districts in Tainan (as of 2019). After 1945 the population initially increased and reached a maximum of 9175 inhabitants in 1969. After that, the population fell continuously due to emigration. The population is characterized by an aging population. In the past, many younger residents migrated to the neighboring districts of Gueiren and Guanmiao, where there were more attractive job opportunities in the rattan factories there. The proportion of members of indigenous peoples in Longqi is almost 0 percent.
