Guiren

Guiren ( Chinese  歸仁 區 , Pinyin Guīrén Qū , Tongyong Pinyin Gueirén Cyu , W.-G. Kui 1 -jen 2 Ch'ü 1 , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Kui-jîn-khu ) is a district of the government -immediate city of Tainan in Southwest of the Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and description

Guiren is located on the southern edge of the urban area of Tainan in the Jianan Plain , an agricultural alluvial plain in western Taiwan. The historic city center of Tainan is about 13 kilometers as the crow flies. The district has an elongated shape with a north-south extension of about 12.5 km and an east-west extension between 2.5 and 6.4 km. In the south the river Erren ( 二仁溪 , Èrrén Xī ) forms approximately the natural border. The neighboring districts in Tainan are Rende in the west, Yongkang in the north, and Guanmiao in the east. In the south, Guiren borders the urban area of Kaohsiung ( Alian and Luzhu districts ).

history

The first historically tangible inhabitants of the area were indigenous Austronesian ethnic groups from the Siraya tribe . Chinese settlers from the coastal province of Fujian came to the country from the time of the Tungning Kingdom (1661–1683). Under the cultural influence of the settlers, more and more brick houses were built and the place was known under the name Hóngwǎcuò ( 紅瓦, ), meaning "red brick house". A school was built at a locality in Baoxi and the place was eventually given the name Guīrén with reference to this school , which can be translated as "for the common good". At the time of Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan (1895-1945), the village of Guiren ( 歸仁 庄 , Chinese Guīrén Zhuāng , Japanese Guiren Shō ) in the Xinfeng district in Tainan Prefecture was set up here in 1920 as an administrative unit . In 1945 Taiwan became part of the Republic of China and the village of Guiren became the rural community of Guiren ( 歸仁 鄉 , Guīrén Xiāng ) in the newly created county of Tainan . On December 25, 2010, the district was incorporated into the city of Tainan and Guiren received the status of a municipality ( , ).

population

With more than 68,000 inhabitants, Guiren is one of the more populous urban districts. The population tends to increase slowly. The proportion of the indigenous population is around 0.5%.

In Guiren, in the district of Wudong, there is one of the few stations of the Taiwanese high-speed railway (THSR) - the only one in the urban area of Tainan. With the opening of high-speed train connections in 2007, Guiren became a transport hub with more than one million travelers a year. The THSR station is connected to the Taiwanese Railway west of Guiren by the Shalun Line . This has two train stations in Guiren: Chang-Jung University ( 長榮 大學 車站 ) in the Datan district and Shalun ( 沙崙 車站 ) in Wudong. The latter forms the transfer station to the high-speed train.

In terms of road connections, Guiren is flanked by national roads (motorways) 1 and 3 , which pass in a north-south direction to the west and east of the district. Provincial road 39 runs through Guiren in a north-south direction. Provincial expressway 86 and county road 182 and partly county road 177 run essentially in east-west direction.

Agriculture

Agriculture plays an important role. Guiren is known for growing cinnamon apples . About 90% of Tainan's cinnamon apple production comes from Guiren. The main growing area is in the Lunding district, and to a lesser extent in Kanxi and Kandong. In the past, the district administration has taken measures to promote cultivation and improve quality. Other agricultural products include soursop , watermelon , peanut, and bamboo shoots . Ornamental plant cultivation also plays an important role .
