The Chiao Tung National University ( Chinese 國立 交通 大學 / 国立 交通 大学 , Pinyin Gúolì Jiāotōng Dàxúe , Tongyong Pinyin Gúolì Jiaotong Dàsyúe , abbreviated: NCTU ) is a research university in Hsinchu , Taiwan . It was founded in Shanghai in 1896. In 1949 its operation on the mainland ended, with the university being continued by the newly founded People's Republic of China . In Taiwan, the Kuomintang (KMT) government re-established the university in 1957.
The NCTU is known for research and teaching in the subjects of electrical engineering , computer science and business administration . 558 lecturers teach at 9 faculties. According to a study by Chiao Tung University, the NCTU ranks 49th in a global comparison of engineering universities. According to the Essential Science Indicators (ESI) and the Science Citation Index (SCI), as well as compiled with the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), the NCTU ranks 21st and 67th in a worldwide university study in the field of computer science. It currently has the most IEEE partners in its field, more than any other university in Taiwan. Its alumni dominate Taiwan's electronics and computer industries with more than 500 chairmen and CEOs . The university is neighbor to the Tsing Hua National University , the "rivalry" of the students of both universities is held annually in the Mei Chu tournament .
