reception

In the Berliner Zeitung one wrote that the film was "solidly staged, well played, but not exciting."

Christiane Peitz described the film in time as Spring Awakening in Swedish. Alluding to the films Mutters Courage and Die Karwoche , which were also represented in the competition at the Berlinale , she also said: "Widerberg comes closer to the madness and the collapse of civilization in Europe in 1943 than any cinematic commemoration of Wajda or Verhoeven."

Awards

It was shown in the competition section of the 46th Berlin International Film Festival in February 1996 and won both a Silver Bear as a special jury award and the Blue Angel for the best European competition film.

At the Guldbagge film award ceremony in 1996, the film emerged victorious in the categories of “best film” and “best director”. Johan Widerberg and Marika Lagercrantz were also nominated in the main actor categories.

At the 1996 Academy Awards , the film was nominated as a Swedish entry for “ best foreign language film ”, but ultimately had to admit defeat to the Dutch film Antonia's World .
