Mutters Courage is a German feature film that was made in 1994 in a British-Austrian co-production and premiered in 1995. The film was based on an autobiographical story by George Tabori .

action

The film is set in Budapest in 1944 . George Tabori tells the story of his mother Elsa Tabori, who is a passionate rummy player . She regularly meets up with her friends in Budapest for afternoon games. The danger of being captured and deported by the Nazis on the street is of little interest to them.

And so it is actually arrested and Elsa Tabori is taken to a collection point for the deportation . She and other Jewish people are supposed to be brought to Auschwitz at Budapest Westbahnhof . At a reloading point near the border, Elsa Tabori defends herself against the kidnapping and speaks to the SS officer in charge. She claims to have a protection pass from the Swedish Red Cross . The passport forbids them to be deported. You just don't have it with you. The SS men threaten her with shooting, but the miracle happens: the SS officer is so surprised by Elsa Tabori's courage that he releases her. Elsa Tabori can travel back to Budapest and still get to the rummy game that was arranged on time.

Work history

George Tabori had already worked on his story as a play in 1979, which was premiered with Hanna Schygulla as Elsa Tabori in the Münchner Kammerspiele . The film is another adaptation of this material.

Also in 1979 there was a radio play production by the broadcasters RIAS, NDR and SDR directed by Jörg Jannings .

Reviews

"First German" black comedy about the Holocaust ", whose grotesque and slapstick-like moments in the knowledge of the" Jewish "authorship of the original do not come across. Impressive both as a serious attempt to uncover the complicated machinery of the annihilation machine and in the endeavor to give shape to the unimaginable. "

Awards

The film won the German Film Prize in silver in 1996 . He also won the Bavarian Film Prize for the best production and the best camera work.

The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating particularly valuable.
