Life

Johan Olof Widerberg was born in Stockholm on March 16, 1974, the son of the famous Swedish director Bo Widerberg and Ann-Christin Santessons.

At a young age, his father brought the rather introverted boy to film. Little by little he recognized his son's extraordinary talent. Widerberg often got smaller roles in his father's films and gained valuable experience in the acting profession as a child.

When Widerberg was 14 years old, his father left the family for another woman. He then broke off contact with his father. A little later he decided to leave school early and move away from home. At the same time he was in front of the camera for a television series. After filming was over, Widerberg resolved never to be in front of the camera again. However, he quickly rejected this resolution and took on another engagement in a television series. Film offers were also not long in coming and at the beginning of the 1990s he finally got in touch with his father again.

After a long time a collaboration between father and son was possible again. In the film Schön ist die Jugendzeit , directed by Bo Widerberg, Johan played 15-year-old Stig, who fell in love with his teacher, played by Marika Lagercrantz , during the war in 1943 . High expectations and speculation grew around this film. Widerberg and his father traveled all over the world to advertise it. In 1996 it was nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film . After this success, Bo Widerberg planned further projects with his son. Nothing came of that, however, as the director died unexpectedly of stomach cancer in 1997 . For Johan Widerberg this meant a heavy blow after it had taken him a long time and effort to reconcile with his father.

Widerberg took refuge in work again and made a number of other films. His greatest success came after the death of his father with The Luck Comes Tomorrow (Under solen) , which was directed by Colin Nutley and later nominated for an Oscar for best foreign language film. In this film Johan Widerberg proved the great versatility of his portrayal possibilities and was able to convince again. In 1999 he also received the award of the best “Shooting Star” in Europe.

Widerberg also played theater at this time. His star role was that of Dorian Gray in the world famous drama The Portrait of Dorian Gray , written by Oscar Wilde . In 2001 he collapsed in the Malmö theater during this play. An inflammation of the pericardium was found to be the cause .

Johan Widerberg is in a relationship with the 5 years younger Swedish actress Tuva Novotny , who was voted the best looking woman in Sweden in 2000.
