The National Road 1 ( Chinese 國道一號 , Pinyin Guódào yī hào , also known as Zhongshan Freeway ( Chinese 中山高速公路 , Pinyin Zhongshan Gaosu Gonglu ) or Sun Yat-sen Freeway (English names. Sun Yat-sen Freeway / National Highway No. 1 )) is a highway in the Republic of China (Taiwan) . The highway runs in a north-south direction in the west of the island from Keelung via Taipei along the western coast to Kaohsiung . The motorway is 373 kilometers long and runs largely parallel to the national road .
Street description
National Road 1 begins in the city center of the port city of Keelung. The highway here has 2 × 2 lanes, runs through a short tunnel and then in a south-westerly direction through an urban corridor between Taipei and Keelung. Then follows a junction with the highway that runs east and south past Taipei, while National Road 1 runs north and west of the city center. The motorway here has 2 × 4 lanes, which are further divided into a parallel structure with 4 × 2 lanes. The connections are designed as large-scale nodes, with wide streets leading into Taipei City. The parallel route becomes wider, with 14 lanes, and then crosses the Danshui River .
There are 2 × 4 lanes for through traffic and 2 × 3 lanes for the departures in the section. The part through the north of Taipei runs through densely populated area. The parallel route ends after 21 kilometers, after which the Xizhi-Wugu Elevated Highway Connection named Freeway and Freeway 1, the overpasses themselves have 2 × 4 lanes. West of Taipei you come through a wooded and hilly area. At Taoyuan, the highway that leads to Taiwan Taoyuan Airport is crossed and then there is an intersection with the highway . After that, the motorway has 2 × 3 lanes and almost every exit leads to an urban settlement with over 100,000 inhabitants. After Taoyuan, the provincial road is crossed, which represents an east-west connection from the coast to the interior.
Further south, the motorway runs close to the coast, followed by hilly areas. Then the Expressway and Freeway 3 will cross. The number of motorway exits is no longer as high as in the north and the motorway has 2 × 3 lanes. In Miaoli you cross the expressway , one of many short east-west expressways to the coast. This is followed by low, forested mountains and then an area with numerous large rivers with wide river beds that carry a lot of water from the mountains in the rainy season.
The highway crosses near Fengyuan , which is a short east-west highway to Qingshui on the coast. The highway then runs in the western section of Taichung . The expressway , which serves local traffic, runs parallel to the motorway . South of Taichung you cross National Road 3 for the third time. The expressway is crossed at Dounan and then continues on the west coast. The highway passes some distance west of the city of Chiayi and then crosses the expressway .
The highway with 2 × 3 lanes runs through a flat wide coastal strip with a few large cities. The expressway is crossed at Xinshi . To the south of it the expressway is crossed, which leads to Guanmiao in the east. The highway then runs through the area of Kaohsiung , Taiwan's second largest city. The southernmost part of National Road 1 has 2 × 4 lanes again and ends in the port and at Kaohsiung Airport .
history
Construction of the highway began in 1971. In 1974, the first section between Keelung and Zhongli was opened. It was the first highway in Taiwan at the time. In 1978 the entire highway was finally opened, which led to Kaohsiung. In 1997, the parallel line about 21 kilometers at the height of Taipei with 14 lanes was opened to increase the capacity. From Taipei (Exit 33 Wugu ) to Exit 69, the highway has 10 lanes for about 36 kilometers, as it has been extended by the elevated Wuyang Highway . Work on this began in November 2009 and was completed on April 20, 2013.
