Yuanlin ( Chinese 員 林 市 , Pinyin Yuánlín Shì ) is a county seat with about 125,000 inhabitants in the district of Changhua in the Republic of China on Taiwan .
location
Yuanlin is located inland on the eastern border of Changhua County in the Changhua Plain of the same name. The urban area covers 40.0380 km². The neighboring communities are (from the north counterclockwise): Fengyuan , Dacun , Fengyuan , Puxin , Yongjing , Shetou , and the city of Nantou in the neighboring district of Nantou .
climate
Yuanlin has a subtropical monsoon climate. The mean annual temperature is 23.1 ° C and varies between 16–17 ° C in January / February and 28–29 ° C in July / August (data from the years 2004–2008). Annual precipitation averages around 1620 mm, but can vary considerably between years. The rainiest months are May to September.
history
The natives of the area were Austronesian ethnic groups ( Pingpu , 平埔族 , "peoples of the plains"). Beginning with the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1661-1722), Han Chinese immigrated in large numbers from the provinces of Fujian and Guangdong to what is now the district of Changhua. Yuanlin settlement was founded by these immigrants in the 18th century. The exact year it was founded is not known.
After Taiwan became part of the Republic of China in 1945 , Yuanlin was given the status of a township ( 鎮 , Zhèn ) in Changhua County. The population grew rapidly in the following decades. The first census in 1946 counted 37,999 inhabitants. In 1953 the 50,000 mark was passed, and by 1979 Yuanlin had over 100,000 residents. The previous high was reached in 2003 with 127,284 inhabitants. Since then, the population has tended to decrease again slightly. With the amendment to the “Law on Local Institutions” of June 17, 2015, the criteria for obtaining city status were relaxed and the minimum population was set at 100,000 instead of 150,000. As a result, Yuanlin was granted city status (市, Shì ) effective August 8, 2015 .
Residents
In 2004, two surveys took place in which the residents were able to classify themselves into ethnic groups or identities. In the first survey only one answer was possible, in the second several answers could be ticked. The first survey yielded the following results: 7% Hakka (thereof 5.1% Taiwanese and 1.9% Waishengren ), 85.1% Hoklo ( 福佬 人 ), 6.2% Waishengren ("Mainland Chinese"), 1, 8% no answer. The second survey (multiple answers possible) resulted in the following picture: Hakka 29.9% (of which 22.9% Taiwanese and 7.0% Waishengren), 91.8% Hoklo, 7.9% Waishengren ("Mainland Chinese"), 1.0% other, 1.8% no answer.
