Shengang

Shengang ( Chinese  伸港鄉 , Pinyin Shengang Xiang ) is a rural municipality ( , Xiang ) in Changhua County of Republic of China on Taiwan .

Location and climate

Shengang is the northernmost community in Changhua County and is on the cross-strait coast . The northern and northeastern borders are formed by the river Dadu or Dadu Xi ( 大肚溪 , Dàdù Xī ), which also forms the border with the urban area of Taichung . The terrain is flat with a height above sea level between 0 and approx. 20 meters and corresponds to a typical coastal landscape. At the mouth of the Dadu Xi there is a larger Wadden Sea, which is known for its ecological treasures (sea birds, crabs, etc.). The annual mean temperature is 23 ° C, the annual precipitation is 1100 mm and is concentrated in the summer months. The wind directions are determined by the monsoon (northeast monsoon in winter and southwest monsoon in summer). From September to May there is a north-northeast wind, the southwest wind blows in June and the west wind in July and August. Fog near the coast is common in November and December.

The neighboring communities are Xianxi in the southwest and Hemei in the southeast, and the boroughs of Longjing and Dadu of Taichung in the north and northeast, respectively.

history

Dutch colonial rule began in Taiwan in 1624, and with it immigration from mainland China to a greater extent. The area of what would later become Changhua County was known to the Dutch as Favorlangh ( 瓦布蘭 , Wǎbùlán ). During the reign of Zheng Chenggong and his successors (1662-1682), the Shengang area belonged to Tianxing County ( 天 興 州 ). After Taiwan was incorporated into the Chinese Empire of the Qing Dynasty , the new Zhuluo County ( 諸 羅 縣 ) was formed, which also included the area of Changhua County. In 1723, the Changhua Administrative Region was created. After the annexation of Taiwan by Japan after the Sino-Japanese War of 1894/95 , a series of administrative reforms followed, until in 1920 the coastal area south of the Dadu Estuary became the village of Xianxi ( 線 西 庄 , Xiànxī zhuāng ) of Taichū Prefecture . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan at the end of the Second World War in 1945, the administrative regions were reorganized again. From the Prefecture Taichū was Taichung County and the village Xianxi became a rural community Xianxi ( 線西鄉 , Xianxi xiang ). On July 1, 1950, the rural community was divided into two rural communities, Xianxi and Xingang ( 新港 鄉 ). However, since there was a second rural community with the name Xingang in Chiayi County , Xingang in Changhua was given the new name Shengang (  -" extended port ") on July 1, 1959 for better differentiation . Since October 21, 1950, the parish has belonged to Changhua County.

population

At the end of 2019, 178 members of indigenous peoples lived in Shengang, corresponding to a population share of 0.5%.

economy

Impression in the village of Eliao

Shengang's economy is heavily influenced by agriculture and fishing. For a long time, rice cultivation was quantitatively dominant, and before the 1970s it made up a large part of agriculture in the municipality and covered around 2,000 to 3,000 hectares. Since the climatic and soil conditions are not optimal for rice cultivation, efforts have been made for a long time to convert agriculture to economically more favorable special crops. The most famous specialty agricultural products are peanuts , garlic and onions . Japanese clams , oysters and milkfish are important in coastal fishing and fish farming . Pig farming dominates animal husbandry, followed by poultry farming. The local industry is concentrated in the 1976 opened, 246.8 hectare industrial area Quanxing ( 全興 工業 區 , Quánxīng gōngyè qū ) in Xidi. Here you will find companies in the textile industry, metal processing industry and mechanical engineering. The second industrial area Zhangbin ( 彰 濱 工業 區 , Zhāngbīn gōngyè qū ) extends over Shengang, Xianxi and Lugang.

traffic

Several national roads lead through Shengang. Provincial road 61 runs parallel to the coast and partly directly along it. Provincial road 17 runs parallel to it further inland to the national road (motorway) 3 in the neighboring municipality of Hemei.

particularities

Mouth of the Dadu

The Fu'an Temple ( 福安 宮 , Fú'ān gōng ) in the village of Datong is a richly furnished Mazu temple, the beginnings of which go back to 1677, when a first temple was founded by immigrants from Quanzhou . The old temple was replaced by a new building in 1917/18, which was continuously expanded from the 1970s. The Shenqing Temple ( 伸 慶 宮 , Shēnqìng gōng ) or Zhangyugu Temple ( 張玉 姑 廟 , Zhāngyùgū miào ) in the village of Xidi dates back to 1956 and is reminiscent of an accident in 1953 when two children from the area were fishing in the River Dadu perished. In the area of the mouth of the Dadu is the 2669.73 hectare nature reserve Dadu Estuary, established on February 28, 1995 ( 大肚溪 口 野生 動物 保護 區 , Dàdùxī kǒu yěshēng dòngwù bǎohù qū ). The nature reserve is particularly important because of its abundance of birds. There are more than 235 species of birds here, around 70% of which are water birds.
