The Taichung County ( Chinese  臺中縣  /  台中县 , pinyin Taizhong Xiàn , Tongyong Pinyin Táijhong Sian , W.-G. Taichung Hsien , PEH OE jī Tâi-tiong koan ) was a former administrative unit of the Republic of China on Taiwan that existed from 1945 to 2010. The county stretched from the west coast of Taiwan on the Formosa Strait to the mountainous region in the center of the island. The name-giving city of Taichung , which is enclosed by it , was not part of the district as a district-free city. The county seat was in Fengyuan City , northeast of Taichung ; the largest city in the district (as of 2010) was Dali south of Taichung. In 2010, the county was incorporated into the urban area of Taichung.

cities and communes

Taichung County was formed from the former Japanese prefecture of Taichu after the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945 . Initially, it also included the area of the later districts of Nantou and Changhua , which were separated as separate administrative units in 1950. After the reorganization in 1950, the district comprised 6 urban parishes ( , Zhèn ) and 15 rural parishes ( , Xiāng ). In the decades that followed, there were changes in the status of some municipalities due to general population growth and increasing urbanization. On March 1, 1976, Fengyuan was raised from a township to a city ( , Shì ). On November 1, 1993, Dali rural community became a city, and on August 1, 1996, the same happened to Taiping rural community .

Most recently, Taichung County was divided into:

Taichung City and County Association 2010

After various opinion polls in previous years showed that more than two-thirds of the population in Taichung County and Taichung City were in favor of uniting the two administrative units, the Legislative Yuan passed a law on April 3, 2009. On June 29, 2009, the Executive Yuan approved the merger plan, which went into effect on December 25, 2010. As a result of the merger, Taichung's population grew to 2.6 million and the city was given the status of a city directly under the government, which brought expanded self-government rights and better financial resources. The 21 municipalities of the district were then given the status of districts ( , ) of the city of Taichung.
