Shengang

Shengang ( Chinese  神 岡 區 , Pinyin Shéngāng Qū ) is a district ( , ) of the city of Taichung in Taiwan , Republic of China .

location

Shengang is located in the north of the so-called Taichung Basin, a few kilometers north of the historic horseracing town of Taichung (in the borders before 2010) on the northeastern edge of the Dadu Plateau ( 大肚 臺地 ). The northern boundary is formed by the Dajia or Dajia Xi ( 大甲溪 , Dàjiǎ Xī ) river. The district has an east-west extension of about 7 kilometers and a north-south extension of about 4 to 5 kilometers. The local climate corresponds to a subtropical monsoon climate with an annual mean temperature of 22 ° C without large seasonal temperature differences. The annual precipitation is between 1800 and 2000 mm and is concentrated in the summer months. The typhoon season lasts from August to September, with few typhoons directly penetrate the area.

The neighboring boroughs are Qingshui in the west, Fengyuan in the east, Houli in the north and Daya and Tanzi in the south. To the west of Shengang is Taichung International Airport .

history

The first Han Chinese immigrants came from Guangdong Province in the 17th century and named the area Xinguangzhuang ( 新 廣 莊 ), meaning "new wide plain". Since Xinguang sounds similar to Shengang in Cantonese, the latter naming and spelling for the place gradually gained acceptance as a result of mistraduction. During the reign of Zheng Chenggong and his successors (1662-1682), the Shengang area belonged to Tianxing County ( 天 興 州 ). In the initial phase of the Qing rule (from 1683) the area was under the district of Zhuluo ( 諸 羅 縣 ) and from 1723 on the newly formed district of Changhua . At the time of Japanese rule (1895-1945), a major administrative reform took place in 1920, in the framework of which the village Shengang ( 神 岡 庄 , Shéngāng Zhuāng ) in the Fengyuan District in Taichu Prefecture was formed. After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, the village of Shengang became the rural community of Shengang ( 神 岡 鄉 , Shéngāng Xiāng ) in Taichung County . On December 25, 2010, the entire county was incorporated into Taichung City and Shengang received the status of a city district ( , ).

population

In April 2020, 1009 members of indigenous peoples lived in the district, corresponding to a population of 1.5%. The largest groups were the Americans (293), Paiwan (274) and Bunun (244).

particularities

In the Sanjiao district there is a country house from 1866, the Xiaoyun Mountain Villa ( 筱雲 山莊 , Xiǎoyún shānzhuāng ). The mansion, which once belonged to a family of Taiwanese scholars, is considered to be one of the few well-preserved manor houses from the time of the Qing Dynasty in Taiwan. The property was famous for its extensive library. Another historical building is the house of the Lin family ( 林 宅 , Lín zhái ) from 1875 in the Shekou district. World icon World icon
