Taiping

Taiping ( Chinese  太平區  /  太平区 , Pinyin Tàipíng Qū ) is a district ( , ) of the city of Taichung in Taiwan , Republic of China .

location

The Taiping district is located to the east of the historic core city of Taichung (in the boundaries before 2010). Taiping is Taichung's second largest district in terms of area after Heping and also in second place after Dali in terms of population . The neighboring districts are Xinshe in the northeast, Beitun in the north, the north and east district in the west, Dali in the southwest and Wufeng in the south. In the east Taiping borders the municipality Guoxing of Nantou County .

The eastern part of Taiping is predominantly made up of the Dahengping Mountains ( Dahengpingshan , 大 橫 屏山 ), a southern branch of the Xueshan Mountains west of the Dajiaxi River ( 大甲溪 , Dàjiǎ xī ). The mountains are characterized by relatively steep mountain slopes that reach a height of 900 to 1200 meters. The highest elevation (1205 meters ) is on the border with Guoxing. West of the Dahengping mountains - of these separated by the Tamaopu-Shuangtung- rejection ( 大茅埔-雙冬斷層 ) - begins the mountains or hills of Wufeng ( Wufengshan 霧峰山 , Wùfēngshān ) of an average height less than 400 meters is . The west of Taiping (the urban center) is in the actual Taichung Basin ( 臺中盆地 , Táizhōng Péndì ). This part makes up about one fifth of the total area, consists mainly of alluvial land and has an average height of 100 meters above sea level. There are several streams flowing to the west and south that are tributaries of the Dalixi ( 大里 溪 , Dàlǐxī ). World icon

Taiping belongs to the subtropical climate zone. The lowest temperatures are measured with an average of around 16 ° C in January (minimum average 10 ° C) and the highest in August with an average of around 28 ° C (maximum average 32 ° C). The rain is concentrated in the months May to August and in the three months of June to August more than half of the annual precipitation falls . During these months the streams carry large amounts of water. The months October to December are the driest.

history

There are two theories about the origin of the place name Taiping ( 太平 ), which can be translated as “greatest peace” (there are other translation options depending on the context): On the one hand, the name is supposed to reflect the desire for peace in the face of constant disputes between Han and Chinese Immigrants and indigenous people in the region, and on the other hand, the area is said to have been taken over by the Japanese invaders without a fight during the Sino-Japanese War of 1895/96, which is said to have led to the naming. During the Japanese era , a fundamental administrative reorganization took place in Taiwan in 1920, which became the basis of the administrative units that exist today. Taiping was formed in its current boundaries as a 'village' ( , Zhuāng ) in Taichū Prefecture . After Taiwan became part of the Republic of China after the end of World War II, the 'village' became a 'rural community' ( , Xiāng ) and the prefecture became Taichung County (the core city Taichung, however, remained independent). In 1996, the population of Taiping exceeded 150,000 and Taiping received city status ( , Shì ) on August 1, 1996 . At the time, it was the largest county-level city in Taiwan. Taichung County was dissolved on December 25, 2010 and fully incorporated into Taichung City, which increased its population to over 1.5 million, giving Taichung the status of a 'city under government' ( 直轄市 , Zhí xiá shì ). All former rural districts (towns, municipalities, rural communities) became urban districts ( , ).

population

In March 2020, Taiping had 194,202 residents. Among them were 3219 members of indigenous peoples , corresponding to a population share of 1.7%. The largest groups were the Americans (1226), Atayal (439), Paiwan (587), and Bunun (568).

economy

The basis of the economy is industry, in which 43 percent of all employees work. Industrial production mainly includes mechanical engineering, investment goods, aluminum and plastic products. The establishment of the Taiping Industrial Park ( 太平 工業 區 , Tàipíng gōngyè qū ) has attracted many commercial enterprises, so that Taiping is now one of the centers of industrial production in Taichung.

In the eastern mountain area, agriculture is predominant. The most important specialties are Japanese loquat (harvest from February to April), longan (from August to September), lychee (period from May to July) and bamboo shoots (April to October), as well as bananas (all year round). To improve marketing , the Loquat Festival ( 枇杷 節 , Pípá jié ) has been held every year in March / April since 2003 .

traffic

The main artery is Provincial Road 74 in the west of Taiping, which also forms a larger section of the western district border. From west to east, city road 136 leads through the mountains towards Guoxing. City Street 129 runs parallel to Provincial Road 74, but further east in a north-south direction. In the neighboring districts to the west, there are stopping stations on the longitudinal line of the Taiwanese Railway.

Higher educational institutions

Taiping is the location of the Chinyi National Technical University (NCUT, 國立 勤益 科技 大學 , Guólì Qínyì Kējì Dàxué , ). The university emerged from a higher technical school founded in 1971, which was later taken over by the state and received the status of a national university in 2007. World icon

particularities

In the more rural regions of Taiping there are opportunities for nature tourism. The Tun District Art Center ( 屯 區 藝文 中心 , Túnqū yìwén zhōngxīn , Eng. Tun District Art Center , ) in the district of Guanghua is the central cultural center for the performing arts in Taichung. The main building is a multi-purpose performance hall with 1150 seats, there is also an experimental theater with 200 seats, as well as exhibition and conference rooms. There are three older temples in Taiping: the Taihe Temple ( 太和 宮 , Tàihé gōng , ) in the district of Taiping, a Mazu temple dating back to 1866, the Shenghe Temple ( 聖 和 宮 , Shènghé gōng , ) im District Toubian, another Mazu Temple, and the Guangxing Temple ( 廣 興 宮 , Guǎngxìng gōng , ) in the district Xinglong, a temple of Chinese folk beliefs , in which Wang Ye ( 王爺 ) is venerated.
