Shigang

Shigang ( Chinese  石 岡 區  /  石 冈 区 , Pinyin Shígāng Qū ) is a district ( , ) of the city of Taichung in Taiwan , Republic of China .

location

Shigang is located north of the old core city of Taichung on the south bank of the Dajiaxi ( 大甲溪 , Dàjiǎ xī ) River , which forms the northern and eastern borders of the district. The height above sea level varies between 260 and 560 meters. The lowest altitude is reached in the Dajiaxi river valley and the highest in the Jinxing district. The east-west extension is 6.3 km and the north-south extension 4.6 km. The outline of the district roughly resembles a palmate, lobed leaf , with fingers stretched south. The neighboring districts are Dongshi in the north, Xinshe in the south and Fengyuan in the west.

Shigang belongs to the subtropical climate zone. The annual mean temperature is 22 ° C and varies between 14.2 ° C in January and 28.3 ° C in July. The mean annual precipitation is 2114 mm. Most of the rain (75%) falls during the south-west monsoon period in summer in the months of March to August, while the north-east monsoon is held back by the central mountains or the Xueshan mountains , so that the winter months are relatively dry (6% of annual precipitation) .

history

An earlier name of Shigang is Shigangzi ( 石崗 仔 , Shígǎngzǐ ) with the approximate meaning "small stone slope" (?). The name comes from the location of Shigang on the south bank of the Dajiaxi River . The earlier population consisted of Austronesians ( Pingpu ), predominantly of the Atayal and Pazeh ethnic groups . In the late phase of Kangxi's rule , the first Han Chinese immigrants came to the area from the mainland, mostly from the provinces of Guangdong and Fujian . During the reign of Qianlong, a settlement boundary between Han and the indigenous lands was established. A series of administrative reforms took place during the Japanese rule and in 1920 the 'village' ( , Zhuāng ) Shigang was formed. In 1945, after the Republic of China took over Taiwan , it became the 'rural community' ( , Xiāng ) Shigang in the newly formed Taichung County . On December 25, 2010, Shigang was incorporated into Taichung City along with the entire Taichung County. Shigang then became a municipality ( , ).

population

About half of the population belongs to the Hakka ethnic group . Hakka is spoken by about 11,000 people. In the districts of Longxing and Jinxing, Minnan speakers form the majority. In February 2020, 105 members of indigenous peoples lived in the district, corresponding to a population of 0.7%.

Administrative division

Shigang is divided into 10 districts (里, Li ):

In earlier times Shigang was completely agricultural. In recent decades, with the development of industry and commerce, there has been rudimentary urbanization, especially in Wan'an. Agriculture is still the most important branch of the economy. The agricultural area in 2017 was 770 hectares. While rice cultivation was dominant in earlier times, today mainly fruit , vegetable and ornamental plants are grown. Main crops are Ponkan , Mountain pear ( 高接梨 , Gao Jieli ), grapes , peaches , persimmons , bitter melon ( 白玉苦瓜  - "White Jade Bitter melon"), sponge gourd , oyster mushroom , and Oncidium -Zierblumen. Agriculture has also increasingly adapted to agricultural tourism.

traffic

By far the most important connection is Provincial Road 3, which runs south along Dajiaxi and crosses the river to the east. There are also smaller urban streets.

International partnerships

An official partnership agreement has existed with the small town of Misasa in Tottori Prefecture ( Japan ) since June 3, 2007.

particularities

Dongfeng-Green Bicycle Corridor

Shigang offers nature and agricultural tourism opportunities. The Tiu Niu Hakka Cultural Center ( 土 牛 客家 文化館 ) houses the district library and a small Hakka cultural museum. A cycle path ( Dong 豐 自行車 綠 廊  - "Dongfeng Green Bicycle Corridor ") was laid on the route of the Dongshi railway line, which was abandoned in 1991 . In the district of Jinxing is the Shizhong Temple ( 石忠 宮 , Shízhōng gōng , ), a Mazu temple built in 1976 . World iconWorld icon

The Dajiaxi is dammed in the north by the Shigang Dam, which is located on the border with the neighboring district of Dongshi and was completed in October 1977 . The dam is a concrete gravity dam with a length of 357 meters and a maximum height of 21.6 meters. The resulting reservoir has an effective storage volume of 2.7 million m³. The dam has 18 flood gates and is mainly used for water regulation and water supply, both for the population and for agriculture. During the 1999 Jiji earthquake , part of the dam was destroyed, but it was repaired afterwards.
