Flood gate

Flood gate of a segment weir on the Ohio River

Flood gates are gates that can be opened and / or closed to control a flow of water. Depending on the system, they are used to keep water out (e.g. at sea locks ), to let it through (e.g. as part of weirs ) or to let it free (e.g. on retention areas ). In particular, in sea locks, the outer, outer gate, which is supposed to hold back the tide, is called the flood gate, while the inner, inner gate (although it also fulfills the definition of a flood gate) is called the ebb gate because it has the task of opening the tide at low tide Keep the water level higher on the land side.
