Ornamental plant cultivation

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The cultivation of flowers and ornamental plants is a branch of horticulture .

Special technology and cultivation systems enable ornamental plants to be produced mostly all year round. The sales reach maturity the plants schedule through specific cultivation methods such as by air control , forcing , exposure, darkening , nozzles, or chemical means such as growth regulators or agents that influence the flowering behavior.

Ornamental plants can be divided into production plants and retail plants. Production companies market their plants through auctions and wholesale markets or directly to resellers, for example at garden centers , flower shops or supermarket chains . Retailers market their plants directly to end consumers. Accordingly, the forms of operation are also defined as belonging to production horticulture or service horticulture.

There are indoor plants , cut flowers cultivated and bedding plants. Also, perennials are often cultivated in ornamental horticulture.

Gardeners , including gardening assistants specializing in ornamental plant cultivation, work in cultural areas, for example in greenhouses , foil houses or in the open air, ensure that the range of plants is presented in a way that promotes sales , hold sales discussions and advise customers on plant selection. Since the specialization in production on the one hand and sales on the other hand is increasing more and more, there is the possibility of specializing in "sales and advice" in the fields of ornamentals and tree nurseries in Bavaria and North Rhine-Westphalia (see sales gardeners ). In Austria there is therefore the apprenticeship garden center clerk, but the three-year apprenticeship there expired on May 31, 2015 and was replaced on June 1, 2011 by the apprenticeship retail - garden center.

Gardener is a recognized training occupation according to the Vocational Training Act (BBiG). He is assigned to the occupational field of agriculture, with a focus on the plant sector. Further training to become a master or technician can take place in technical schools . Horticulture can be studied in technical colleges and universities .

In modern ornamental plant cultivation, too, attempts are being made to use as few pesticides as possible (for reasons of cost and environmental protection). The use of beneficial insects that are produced in special farms is one of the ways to produce environmentally friendly plants. This then enables so-called integrated or even organic plant cultivation in ornamental plants.
