Heping ( Chinese 和平 區 / 和平 区 , Pinyin Hépíng Qū ) is the largest and least populated district ( 區 , Qū ) of the city of Taichung in Taiwan , Republic of China .
Until 2010, Heping was a rural community ( 鄉 , Xiāng ) in Taichung County , which was fully incorporated into Taichung City on December 25, 2010.
location
The over 1000 km² large district takes up the entire eastern half of the former Taichung district. It stretches in the central mountains of Taiwan along the upper reaches of the Dajia River (大甲溪), which is dammed up in Heping to form the 454 hectare Deji Reservoir (德基 水庫). Since part of the road running along the Dajia was destroyed in an earthquake in 1999, there has been no direct traffic connection from the eastern part of the district to the western part and the center of Taichung.
The " Lishan Scenic Area " ( 梨山 風景區 , Lishan Scenic Area ) extends in the Dajia Valley and the surrounding mountains . The thermal springs of Guguan (谷 關 溫泉) are a tourist attraction . The northern part of the district (305.7 km 2 ) with the 3,886 m high Xueshan (雪山), Taiwan's second highest mountain, belongs to the Shei Pa National Park . An eastern part of Heping (95.0 km 2 ) is part of the Taroko National Park .
population
According to official statistics, 4,268 of the 11,000 inhabitants at that time were members of indigenous peoples . Mostly it was Atayal . The city district is one of the " indigenous regions " in which they have the right to special cultural support.
