Xihu

Xihu ( Chinese  溪湖 鎮 , Pinyin Xīhú Zhèn ) is a township ( , Zhèn ) in Changhua County in the Republic of China in Taiwan .

location

Xihu is relatively centrally located in Changhua County on the Changhua Plain . The natural boundary to the (south) west is largely formed by the small river Dongluoxi ( 東 螺溪 , Dōngluó xī ) or Maiyucuoxi ( 麥 嶼 厝 溪 , Màiyǔcuò xī ), which thus represents the border to the west-south-west neighboring communities Erlin and Pitou . Other neighboring communities are Puyan in the north, Buxin in the east and Yongjing and Tianwei in the southeast.

history

The place name Xihu is made up of the characters or terms ,  - "stream, (small) river" and ,  - "lake". “Brook” or “river” refers to today's Dongluoxi , which used to be the main arm of the Zhuoshui ( 舊 濁水 溪 , Jiù zhuóshuǐ xī  - “old Zhuoshui river”). “Lake” refers to two lakes, the Lunzicuo Lake ( 崙 仔 厝 湖 , Lúnzǐcuò hú ) and the Schazi Lake ( 沙 仔 湖 , Shāzǐ hú ), both of which no longer exist today. During the time of the Japanese rule (1895-1945) Xihu was organized as a "village" ( 溪湖 庄 , Xīhú zhuāng ). In 1938 it was given the status of a “street”, ie urban settlement ( 溪湖 街 , Xīhú jiē ). After Taiwan was taken over by the Republic of China , it became the "township" ( , Zhèn ) Xihu, initially (1946–1950) in Taichung County and from 1950 in the newly established Changhua County.

population

With a population of around 55,000 (2020), Xihu was fifth among the 27 municipalities in Changhua County. At the end of 2019, 173 members of indigenous peoples lived in Xihu, corresponding to a population share of 0.3%.
