Xihu ( Chinese 西湖 鄉 , Pinyin Xīhú Xiāng ) is a rural community ( 鄉 , Xiāng ) in Miaoli County in the Republic of China (Taiwan) .
description
Xihu is located southwest of the county capital Miaoli , about 2.5 kilometers from the coast. The neighboring communities are next to Miaoli Tongxiao in the southwest, Houlong in the north, and Tongluo in the southeast. In terms of area, Xihu is the second smallest municipality in the district with 41.08 km² (before the district capital Miaoli) and in terms of population the third smallest (before Sanwan and Shitan ). The largest flowing body of water is the small river Xihu or Xihu Xi ( 西湖 溪 , Xīhú xī ) of the same name , which winds its way along the longitudinal axis of Xihu from southeast to northwest.
history
During the time of the Japanese rule (1895-1945) the village ( 庄 , Zhuāng ) Sihu was established ( 湖 庄 庄 , Sìhú Zhuāng ). After the Republic of China took over Taiwan at the end of the Second World War, Sihu was reorganized as a rural community ( 鄉 , Xiāng ) on January 11, 1946 . On October 25, 1950, Miaoli County was reorganized and Sihu was then a parish in Miaoli County. Due to the same name as the municipality of Sihu in Yunlin County, Sihu in Miaoli County was renamed Xihu ( 西湖 , Xīhú - "West Lake") on August 3, 1954 .
population
The majority of the residents of Xihu belong to the Hakka ethnic group. At the end of 2019, 40 members of indigenous peoples lived in Xihu, which corresponded to a population share of 0.6%.
