Toufen ( Chinese 頭 份 市 , Pinyin Tóufèn Shì ) is a district town with about 100,000 inhabitants in the Republic of China on Taiwan . It is the most populous city in the Miaoli district .
description
Toufen is inland, but the coast is only about 2.5 kilometers from the western city limits. The surrounding communities are in the West Zhunan , southwest Zaoqiao and east Sanwan - all in Miaoli County. In the north and northeast, the city limits also form the border to the neighboring district of Hsinchu and the communities of Baoshan and Emei located there . The Zhonggang River ( 中港溪 ) flows through the urban area in an east-west direction . The urban area covers 53.3209 km² and makes up 2.93% of the area of the Miaoli district.
history
Until the 18th century, the area was inhabited exclusively by Taiwanese indigenous peoples - Pingpu ethnicities, 平埔族 such as the Taokas ( 道 卡斯 族 ), as well as Saisiyat and Atayal . The immigration of Han Chinese from mainland China began during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1735 to 1796). The indigenous population was then gradually assimilated or pushed into the eastern mountains.
In 2015 Toufen passed the 100,000 mark and was upgraded from a municipality ( 鎮 , Zhèn ) to a city ( 市 , Shì ) on October 5, 2015 .
population
About 90 percent of the urban population is made up of members of the Hakka ethnic group.
