The Aegidienkirche on the Mönchberg (actually a plateau above the valley of the Elbe stream ) west of the Hadamar city center is the successor to the oldest known church in the city. The Franciscan order settled there in the 17th century and had the church and monastery built today. After the monastery was closed at the beginning of the 19th century, various healing institutions of the Duchy of Nassau were established in the rooms of the former Franciscan monastery .

From 1828 to 1872 the midwifery training and maternity institute for the Duchy of Nassau was located there . 1883 took Korrigendenanstalt for so-called improvement prisoners on their operation. For them, the building stock was significantly expanded according to plans by Eduard Zais . In 1906 it became the Hadamar State Hospital.

In the Third Reich, the Hadamar killing center was operated here. In August 1941, the 10,000. killed patient committed with a celebration. A total of around 15,000 patients were murdered.

Three buildings were erected in the 1970s: the forensic facility with two buildings with 140 seats and the psychiatry for 85 patients. Forensics was a penal institution according to § 64 StGB for addicts offenders. Around 90 percent of patients relapse. Patients could be visited in the former monastery rooms at the Aegidienkirche.

Forensics and psychiatry were demolished from 2017. Starting in 2018, a 100 m long and 18 million euro expensive new building will be built. House 1, the administration building of the clinics, remained.
