Nantou ( Chinese  南投市 , Pinyin Nántóu Shì , W.-G. Nan-t'ou Shih , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Lâm-tâu-chhī ) is a city in the Republic of China on Taiwan . It is the capital of Nantou County in central Taiwan.

Location and population

Nantou is located in the west of the county on the border with Changhua County . The urban area forms approximately a square with an edge length of 8 to 9 kilometers. The city lies on the western left bank of the Maoluo River, whose valley is separated from the coastal plain in the west by the Bagua range of hills. The central mountains of Taiwan rise east of Nantou. The city is located on Autobahn 3 , which connects to the metropolises of western and northern Taiwan. Nantou has no rail connection. The average height above sea level is around 200 meters. Nantou is bordered by Zhongliao Municipality to the east, Caotun to the north, Mingjian to the south, and Shetou , Yuanlin and Fenyuan municipalities to the west (the latter three in neighboring Changhua County).

With almost 100,000 inhabitants, Nantou is by far the largest city in the district of the same name.

history

The region around Nantou was settled by Chinese immigrants in the 17th century. In 1759 a yamen was established in the city . Under the Japanese rule over the island (1895-1945) Nantou belonged from 1920 to the prefecture Taichu ( Taichung ). Even under the Republic of China, Nantou belonged to Taichung County from 1945 until Nantou County was separated from it in 1950 and the city of the same name was designated its capital.

In the area of ​​the city, the planned place Zhongxing was built , which on July 1, 1957 became the seat of the government of Taiwan Province . In 1981 Nantou, which until then had the status of a township ( , Zhèn ) , was upgraded to a city ( , Shì ). In the earthquake of September 21, 1999 , 92 people were killed in Nantou and over 1,000 buildings were damaged.

The area around Nantou has fertile soil. Agricultural products from the outskirts of the city are (with harvest times) rice , green tea , ginger (September to April), sponge gourd (April to July), tomatoes (November to March), pumpkins , papaya (May to July), pineapple (April to July), Wendan ( 文旦 ) - grapefruit (August to September), Longan (July to August) and Lychee (June to July).

Educational institutions

The central campus of the Research Institute for Industrial Technology (ITRI) is located in Nantou , with its headquarters in Hsinchu . The campus opened on September 15, 2014.
