history

In earlier times, the Mingjian area was practically completely covered by forest. From the reign of Emperor Kangxi (1671–1721), new settlers who came from the Chinese coastal province of Fujian began to clear the forest and practice agriculture. During the time of the Japanese rule over Taiwan (1895-1945) the region was administratively reorganized several times. From the 1920s it belonged to Taichu Prefecture . After Taiwan was transferred to the Republic of China in 1945, it was reorganized again and Mingjian became a rural community in Nantou County, which was newly established in 1950.

population

With just over 38,000 inhabitants, Mingjian is the fifth largest in terms of population of the 13 municipalities in Nantou County. At the end of 2017, 197 people (around 0.5%) belonged to the indigenous peoples of Taiwan .

traffic

Mingjian is relatively well connected in terms of transport. The eastern section of the national road 3 (motorway) leads in a direct north-south direction through the municipality. Provincial road 3 runs a little further to the west, parallel to it, also in north-south direction. Provincial road 16 branches off from the latter and runs north of the Zhuoshui River to the east. Other larger roads are the district road 139b (139 ) on the western edge of the municipality, also in a north-south direction, which turns further south to the east, and the district roads 150 and 152, which run essentially in an east-west direction.
