Zhushan ( Chinese  竹山 鎮 , Pinyin Zhúshān Zhèn , Tongyong Pinyin Jhúshan Jhèn ) is a township ( , Zhèn ) in Nantou County in central Taiwan .

Location and nature

Zhushan (literally: "Bamboo Mountain") is located on the western edge of Nantou County. The neighboring communities are (clockwise) Ershui in Changhua County , as well as Minjian and Jiji in the north, Lugu and Xinyi in the east, Alishan in Chiayi County in the south, Gukeng ( Yunlin County ) in the southwest, Douliu and Linnei (both Yunlin County) in the west . The terrain is hilly and characterized by large differences in altitude. The lowest point above sea level is 106 meters and the summit of Luqushan ( 鹿 屈 山 ) forms the highest point at 2288 meters. The Zhuoshui River flows through Zhushan .

history

In the south of Zhushan lies the traditional settlement area of ​​the Tsou , one of the indigenous peoples of Taiwan , who are the indigenous people of the area. At the time Taiwan became part of the Qing Dynasty Chinese Empire, Han Chinese settlers came to the area in the 18th century and gradually displaced or assimilated the indigenous people. During the Japanese rule of Taiwan , the Zhushan area was a center of bamboo forestry . After the island of Taiwan was transferred to the Republic of China , Zhushan became a municipality in the newly established Nantou County in 1950.

Residents

With a population of about 55,000, Zhushan ranks fourth among the municipalities in Nantou County in terms of population. At the end of 2017, according to official statistics, 258 people (just under 0.5%) belonged to the indigenous peoples.

In the north, Zhushan is crossed by National Road 3 and thus has a direct motorway connection. Provincial road 3 or 3c (3 ) runs further south, and runs from southwest to northeast. County road 147 branches off from provincial road 3 and runs largely parallel to the Zhuoshui River to the south. District road 151 also branches off to the east from Provincial Road 3. Zhushan has no rail connection.

Agriculture

Zhushan's agricultural products include (with the seasonal sales times ): year-round oolong tea ( 烏龍茶 ), jin xuan tea ( 金 萱 茶 ), cueiyu tea ( 翠玉 茶 ), sweet potatoes , bamboo shoots and mushrooms, and guavas from January to February , Tomatoes, grapes; from May to June dragon fruit .

Landmarks, tourism

Zhushan has some sights. Zhushan by the so-called Chelungpu- extends rejection . After the Jiji earthquake in 1999, a small educational building with a park, the Chelungpu Fault Park ( 車 籠 埔 斷層 保存 園區 , Chelungpu Fault Preservation Park , 23 ° 47 ′ 41 ″  N , 120 ° 42 ′ 38.2 ″  E ) with a small teaching building. The park is subordinate to the National Museum of Science in Taichung . In the district of the Zhongyang is Zi Nan ( 紫南 ) temple of the earth deity Tudigong is dedicated ( 23 ° 47 '41 "  N , 120 ° 42' 38.2"  O ). The temple was built in 1745 during the reign of Emperor Qianlong .

Natural attractions are the "Forest of Oblivion" ( 忘憂森林 ) or Lotus Forest , who with Lotus has nothing directly to do, but a remnant of a conifer grove is that was set as a result of a landslide after the Jiji Earthquake permanently under water and thus died out. The fog-shrouded place has a special atmosphere. The place is near the Shanlinxi forest nature reserve ( 杉林溪 森林 生態 渡假 園區 ) in the Da'an district. Also in the Da'an district are the Bagua tea plantations, where mainly different types of Oolong are grown. A tourist destination is the bamboo suspension bridge ( 梯子 吊橋 ) in Da'an. The Ruilong waterfalls ( 瑞龍 瀑布 ) in the Pingding district are also worth seeing .
