history
In the area of Douliu (Meilin site, 梅林 遺址 ) pottery finds were made which were dated to an age of 2000 to 3000 years in the Taiwanese Neolithic Age. The historically tangible first inhabitants of the area were indigenous Taiwanese peoples (Pingpu). Through the continuous immigration of Han Chinese since the 17th century, they were gradually assimilated or pushed into the mountains further to the east.
In 1906, during the Japanese rule over Taiwan , Douliu was badly damaged by an earthquake and then rebuilt according to plan. The old Taiping Street ( 太平 老街 , Tàipíng lǎo jiē ) is considered a sight . In 1950, Douliu became the capital of the newly established Yunlin County of the Republic of China in Taiwan.
One of the four campuses of the Cheng Kung National University (NCKU) is located in Douliu .
