Dongshi ( Chinese  東 勢 鄉  /  东 势 乡 , Pinyin Dōngshì Xiāng , Tongyong Pinyin Dongshìh Siang ) is a rural community in Yunlin County in the Republic of China (Taiwan) .

history

From the 17th and 18th centuries, Han Chinese settlers immigrated to the Dongshi area , mainly from Fujian Province . During the Qing reign, the area was administratively part of Changhua County. After the annexation of Taiwan by Japan in 1895, a series of administrative reforms followed, until Dongshi in 1920 as part of the village ( , Zhuāng ) Haikou ( 海口 庄 , Hǎikǒu zhuāng ) in Huwei County ( 虎尾 郡 , Hǔwěi jùn ) in the Tainan Prefecture was organized. This division remained until the end of Japanese rule. After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, the Haikou administrative unit was divided into the rural communities ( , Xiāng ) Taixi and Dongshi on September 22, 1946 . On October 25, 1950, the northern portions of Tainan County were separated and organized as the new Chiayi and Yunlin counties. Dongshi became a rural community in Yunlin County.

population

With 14,368 inhabitants (as of Feb. 2020), Dongshi was one of the medium-sized communities in Yunlin County. 36 people (0.3%) belonged to the indigenous peoples .
