The Cheng Kung National University ( NCKU , Chinese 國立 成功 大學 , Pinyin Guólì Chénggōng Dàxué , English National Cheng Kung University ) is a university in Tainan , Taiwan . The university is named after Zheng Chenggong (Koxinga), who defeated the Dutch in the 17th century and established the Kingdom of Dongning in Taiwan. Unofficially, the university is often abbreviated to 'Chengda' ( 成大 , Chéng dà ).
history
The forerunner of the later national university was the Technical High School Tainan ( 臺南 高等 工業 學校 , Táinán Gāoděng Gōngyè Xuéxiào ) founded on January 15, 1931 at the time of the Japanese rule in Taiwan at the instigation of the Governor General of Taiwan . After the Republic of China took over Taiwan in 1945, the teaching facility was reorganized as the Technical University of Taiwan Province ( 臺灣 省立 工學院 , Táiwān Shěng Lì Gōng Xuéyuàn ) in 1946 . From 1952 the institution received financial support from the United States and entered into a long-term cooperation with Purdue University in West Lafayette ( Indiana ) in order to adapt its own training standards to an international level. In 1956 faculties of the humanities, natural sciences and economics were set up and the college was elevated to the Taiwanese Cheng Kung Provincial University ( 臺灣 省立 成功 大學 , Táiwān Shěng Lì Chénggōng Dàxué ). The new university saw itself as the leading university in southern Taiwan, analogous to the leading role played by the National Taiwan University in northern Taiwan. In 1971 the provincial university was elevated to the Cheng Kung National University ( 國立 成功 大學 , Guólì Chénggōng Dàxué ), which in addition to a higher reputation also resulted in improved financial resources . In 1983 a medical faculty was established, in 1987 a research institute for aeronautics and experimental astrophysics was added and in 1988 the newly built university clinic was opened. The Faculty of Social Sciences began teaching in 1997, followed by the Faculties of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science as well as Planning and Design in 2003. As the last of the nine existing faculties today, the Faculty of Biosciences and Biotechnology was established in 2005.
