The Chung-Hsing National University ( Nchu , 國立中興大學 ) is a university in the Republic of China on Taiwan is based in the city of Taichung .

history

At the time of the Japanese rule over Taiwan (1895 to 1945), a secondary school (academy) for forestry and agronomy was founded in 1919 in Taipei (then Taihoku ). In 1928, this academy became part of the newly established Taihoku Imperial University (now Taiwan National University ). In 1943 the college was spun off from the university and relocated to Taichung . After the end of Japanese rule and the takeover of Taiwan by the national Chinese government in 1945, the college was reorganized as the Agricultural College for Taiwan Province in 1946 . In 1961 three universities merged to form the Taiwan Chung Hsing Provincial University . In addition to the agricultural college, the three universities also included a newly established college for natural and engineering sciences on the same campus in Taichung and the college for law and economics founded in Taipei in 1949. The newly founded provincial university thus had two campuses - one in Taichung and one in Taipei. In 1964, an evening school was opened on the Taipei campus, and an evening school on the Taichung campus followed in 1968. In the same year, a college of fine arts in Taichung was added.

In 1971 the university was promoted from the provincial university to a national university and received its current name. In 1999 a college for veterinary sciences was opened. For this purpose, the Taipei campus with the University of Law and Economics and the evening school there had to be transferred to the Taipei National University , which was newly founded this year , so that the NCHU has since then been limited to Taichung again.

The NCHU is home to Taiwan's only veterinary college and also has a number of specialized technical facilities that are unique in Taiwan.

In 2016, 15,658 students were studying at the NCHU, of which 8,127 were studying for a bachelor's degree, 1,782 were doctoral students and 1,220 were postdocs.
