The National Taiwan University ( Chinese 國立 臺灣 大學 , Pinyin Guólì Táiwān Dàxué , short Taida , English National Taiwan University NTU ) is a state university in Taipei in the Republic of China (Taiwan) . It was part of the Taiwan University System and is now part of the National Taiwan University System and has approximately 31,000 students enrolled. It has repeatedly been named the best university in Taiwan and among the world's best universities by several prestigious rankings (HEEACT 2007, THE-QS World University Rankings 2009, Global University Ranking 2009, QS World University Rankings 2010, Webometrics Ranking of World Universities 2011 ).
history
The origins of the national university go back to the Imperial University of Taihoku ( Japanese 台北 帝国 大学 , Taihoku teikoku daigaku ) founded by the Japanese Empire during his rule over Taiwan , which was founded in 1928 and was one of nine imperial universities . After Taiwan was handed over to the Republic of China, the university was given its current name in 1945.

Importance as an elite university
Its importance as an elite university in Taiwan is z. B. from the dominant role of their graduates in politics: Since the establishment of direct democratic presidential elections in Taiwan (1996), in the following five elections out of 19 candidates for president and vice-president were both government and vice-presidents opposition parties, 13 NTU graduates, including six law school graduates such as B. the incumbent President Tsai Ing-wen ( DPP ) and her predecessors Ma Ying-jeou ( KMT ) and Chen Shui-bian (DPP). All four of Taiwan's directly elected presidents since 1996 were NTU graduates.
