Chu was his party's candidate in the Taiwanese presidential election on January 16, 2016 .

academic career

Eric Chu completed a bachelor's degree in business administration from Taiwan National University . After completing his military service, he went to the United States to study , where he obtained a master's degree in finance (graduated in 1987) and a doctorate in accounting (1991) from New York University . After returning to Taiwan, he continued his academic career from 1992 to 2001 as a professor at the National Taiwan University.

Political career

From 1998 to 2001, Chu was a member of the Taiwanese parliament ( Legislative Yuan ) as a member of the Kuomintang . On December 1, 2001, he was elected District Administrator of Taoyuan County and held this office until 2009, if he was re-elected in 2005. He was then appointed to the government cabinet ( Executive Yuan ) by President Ma Ying-jeou , where he served as Vice-Prime Minister in the Wu Den-yih cabinet for a year . In 2010 he took part in the first mayoral election of the newly founded government-direct city of New Taipei and won with 52.1% of the votes ahead of the candidate of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Tsai Ing-wen (47.39%). In the nationwide local elections on November 29, 2014, in which the Kuomintang suffered heavy losses, Chu in New Taipei was reelected with 50.06% of the vote, ahead of Yu Shyi-kun (DPP, 48.78%). As the only remaining Kuomintang mayor in Taiwan's six sub-government cities, Chu was seen as a beacon of hope for the renewal of his party. After Ma Ying-jeou stepped down from the Kuomintang chairmanship in December 2014, Chu announced his candidacy for the office of chairman. As the only candidate standing for election, he was, as expected, elected as the new leader of the Kuomintang on January 17, 2015.

At the same time as the internal party dismissal of the originally nominated candidate Hung Hsiu-chu due to poor poll results , Chu was appointed the Kuomintang candidate for the 2016 presidential election at a special party conference on October 17, 2015 . In order to campaign, he took a temporary leave of absence from the post of Mayor of New Taipei City. In the presidential election, Chu received 31.04% of the vote, defeating Tsai Ing-wen , the candidate of the opposition party DPP (56.12%). On the evening of the election defeat, Chu announced his immediate resignation from the position of chairman of the Kuomintang.
