Ko Wen-je ( Chinese  柯文哲 , Pinyin Kē Wénzhé , Pe̍h-ōe-jī Koa Bûn-tiat ; born August 6, 1959 in Hsinchu ) is a Taiwanese doctor, politician and since December 25, 2014 mayor of the Taiwanese capital Taipei .

life and career

Ko studied medicine at Taiwan National University from 1979 to 1986 . After completing his studies and completing military service, he found employment in the Department of Surgery at the Clinic of the National University of Taiwan , where he worked until 2014 , interrupted by a year of study at the Clinic of the University of Minnesota (1993/94). At the same time, he continued his studies at the Taiwan National University Medical School and received his doctorate in June 2002. From 2008 Ko was head of the department for traumatology at the clinic of his university.

Entry into politics

Although Ko had never belonged to a party before, he repeatedly expressed and committed himself publicly in connection with political issues, whereby his positions were mostly close to those of the so-called Pan-Green coalition . On January 6, 2014, Ko announced that he would run for the upcoming mayor election in Taipei at the end of the year. In the election on November 29, 2014, Ko was elected the new mayor with 57.16% of the vote, ahead of Sean Lien ( Kuomintang ) (40.82%). He took office on December 25, 2014. In 2018, Ko was re-elected with 41.05% of the vote.

In the run-up to the 2020 Taiwanese presidential and parliamentary elections , Ko founded a new party, the Taiwan People's Party , on August 6, 2019 , and became its first chairman. The party set itself the goal of reducing the influence of party politics in Taiwan and establishing a government supported by experts and technocrats.
