Chi-Huey Wong
Chi-Huey Wong (born August 3, 1948 in Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese biochemist and professor of chemistry and chemical biology at the Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla , California .
Life
Wong received his bachelor's and master's degrees in science from National Taiwan University in Taipei , Taiwan. In 1982 Wong received his Ph.D. PhD in chemistry at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology under George M. Whitesides . After completing his postdoc at Harvard University , he became Assistant Professor at Texas A&M University in 1983 and, from 1989, Professor at the Scripps Research Institute .
He specializes in bio-organic chemistry , especially in the chemistry of carbohydrates and so-called "chemical proteomics ". He developed the first methods for the systematic, programmable and automated, enzyme-based synthesis of oligosaccharides . This found application in the manufacture of vaccines against infectious diseases and breast cancer and in glycan microarrays for the large-scale rapid analysis of protein-carbohydrate interactions.
Since 2004, Wong has been the founding director of the Genomics Research Center at Academia Sinica, and since October 2006 has been elected President of Academia Sinica, the national academy in Taiwan. Wong is a member of the United States ' National Academy of Sciences (2002) , the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1996), and a member of Academia Sinica, the Academy of the Republic of China (1994). Due to alleged insider trading in connection with his daughter and an investment in a biotechnology company, Wong was dismissed as president of Academia Sinica in 2016.
In 1999 he received the Claude S. Hudson Award , 2000 the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award, 2005 the American Chemical Society Award for Creative Work in Synthetic Organic Chemistry , 2008 the FA Cotton Medal , 2012 the Arthur C. Cope Award and 2014 the Wolf- Price in chemistry. In 2015 he received the Robert Robinson Award .
