The Lac de Kruth-Wildenstein (German Krüt-Wildensteiner reservoir ), often just called Lac de Wildenstein (Wildensteiner See) , is a reservoir in the southern Vosges in Alsace , France . Despite its name, the lake is not in the area of the municipality of Wildenstein , but belongs to Kruth and to a small extent to Fellering .
Geographical location
The Krüth-Wildenstein reservoir is located in the upper part of the Saint-Amarin valley between the villages of Wildenstein in the north and Kruth in the south. The reservoir is traversed by the Thur . The 666 m high Schlossberg with the Wildenstein castle ruins forms the southern end .
purpose
In spring, the Krüth-Wildenstein reservoir collects the melt water that flows off the surrounding mountains of the High Vosges . It thus serves to protect the villages in the Thur Valley from flooding . The lake has a storage volume of 12 million m³. Because of the slight slope of the Thur in this section of the river, no hydroelectric power station was built .
history
In 1947 the Thur valley was hit by a catastrophic flood as a result of a dam burst above Wildenstein. Planning for the reservoir began in 1954, construction began in 1959 and was completed in 1963.
tourism
In summer when the traffic jam is full, the lake is also used for recreational purposes. It offers opportunities for several water sports, including sailing , windsurfing and diving . The lake is also popular with anglers because of its abundance of fish.
