Krzysztof "Kris" Matyjaszewski (born April 8, 1950 in Konstantynów Łódzki , Poland ) is a Polish-American polymer chemist .

CV and career

In 1972 Matyjaszewski graduated from Moscow University of Technology with a degree in chemistry. At the Polish Academy of Sciences he received his doctorate in 1976 under Stanisław Penczek .

From 1977 to 1978 Matyjaszewski was a post-doctoral student at the University of Florida . Then he went back to Poland and became a research assistant at the Polish Academy of Sciences. From 1984 to 1985 he worked as a research assistant at the CNRS in France and then as a visiting professor at the Sorbonne in Paris . Matyjaszewski received his habilitation in 1985 at the Technical University of Łódź . Then Matyjaszewski went to the United States and was at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, first junior professor ( assistant professor ) and then associate professor ( associate professor ). Since 1998 he has also been director of the Center for Macromolecular Engineering and holder of the JC Warner Professorship for Natural Sciences . Since 2001 he has also been Associate Professor at the Polish Academy of Sciences in Łódź and the University of Pittsburgh .

Matyjaszewski has both Polish and US citizenship. It is married and has two children.

Work area

Matyjaszewski at a lecture

Matyjaszewski is mainly active in the field of polymer chemistry. In 1995 he and Mitsuo Sawamoto discovered Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) - almost simultaneously but independently of one another .

Publications

Matyjaszewski is the author / co-author of over 500 peer-reviewed publications, 10 books and 79 international patents. In 2007, Matyjaszewski was in fourth place in the ranking of the most cited chemists.
