Mitsuo Sawamoto ( Japanese 澤 本 光 男 , Sawamoto Mitsuo ; * 1951 in Kyōto ) is a Japanese polymer chemist at the University of Kyoto .

Live and act

Sawamoto earned a bachelor's degree from Kyoto University in 1974 , a master 's degree in 1976 and a Ph.D. in 1979 from Toshinobu Higashimura. in polymer chemistry . In 1980 and 1981 he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Akron before receiving a first teaching position at the University of Kyoto in 1981. Since 1994 he has been Professor of Polymer Chemistry at the Graduate School of Engineering at Kyoto University.

From 2008 to 2010, Sawamoto was President of the Japan Polymer Science Society. Currently (as of 2013) he is a member of the Science Council of Japan . He is an editor of Journal of Polymer Science A: Polymer Chemistry .

In 1995 Sawamoto and Krzysztof Matyjaszewski described Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization (ATRP) almost simultaneously and independently of one another .

Sawamoto published more than 350 original articles and more than 30 systematic reviews . In 1992 he received the Arthur K. Doolittle Award from the American Chemical Society (ACS) and in 2017 the Benjamin Franklin Medal from the Franklin Institute .
