The Chung-Cheng National University ( CCU , Chinese 國立中正大學 ) is a university in Taiwan . They are located in the rural community of Minxiong , near Chiayi City .
history
In 1986, the Executive Yuan decided to found a university "in honor of Chiang Kai-shek " to serve as a higher education institution for the three counties of Yunlin , Chiayi and Tainan . It was founded on July 1, 1989, when Lin Ching-Jiang (林清江) took office as the first president of the university. The university got its name from the first name Chiang Kai-sheks, Chung-cheng. In the first phase, five faculties ( colleges ) were established: humanities, natural sciences, social sciences, engineering sciences and administrative sciences. In 1998/99, faculties for law and education were added.
Structure of the university
In 2012 the university comprised the above-mentioned faculties, which together offered 29 undergraduate courses , 44 master's courses , 29 doctoral ( Ph.D. ) courses and 17 part-time graduate courses . The university had more than 960 faculty or permanent staff in 2012 and was attended by around 12,000 students.
As it sees itself, the CCU sees itself as a research university with the self-set goal of training students who can "cope with the complexity of the challenges of the 21st century".
University symbols
The university emblem shows a five-pointed rosette, which is supposed to symbolize the five faculties from the initial phase of the university, grouped around the stylized, nested term 中正 ( Chung Cheng or Zhongzheng ). The badge is also intended to symbolize the pursuit of constant self-improvement. The university's motto 積極 創新 , 修 德澤 人 can be translated as "renewal with seriousness and virtue with altruism". There is an official university anthem evoking research, teaching, learning, ethics, democracy etc. and the spirit of the university in general.
On July 1, 2014, a small memorial plaque was inaugurated on the university campus. The inscription on the plaque urges academic freedom, describes the university as a haven for the fearless and impartial search for truth and as the “fifth pillar of society” (alongside administration, jurisdiction, legislature and media). The text on the plaque corresponds to a statement by the university on March 24, 2014 during the domestic political crisis at the time of the sunflower movement .
