Roy G. Fitzgerald
Roy Gerald Fitzgerald (born August 25, 1875 in Watertown , Jefferson County , New York , † November 16, 1962 in Dayton , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1921 and 1931 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1890 Roy Fitzgerald came to Dayton, Ohio with his parents. He attended the public schools in his respective homeland. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1896, he began to work in Dayton in this profession. During the First World War , he was captain of an infantry unit in the US Army between 1917 and 1919 . He was used on the European theater of war. In 1928 he became a member of the reserve as a lieutenant colonel. Politically, he joined the Republican Party . Between 1927 and 1930 he took part as a delegate at various conferences of the Inter-Parliamentary Union , which took place in Paris , Berlin , Geneva and London .
In the 1920 congressional election , Fitzgerald was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the third constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Democrat Warren Gard on March 4, 1921 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1931 . These had been shaped by the events of the Great Depression since 1929 . From 1923 to 1925, Fitzgerald chaired the Department of Commerce's Expenditure Control Committee; between 1927 and 1931 he headed the Committee on Revision of the Laws . He campaigned for laws against child labor. Since he was interested in aviation from a young age, he called for the formation of the United States Air Force . However, this only took place in 1947.
In 1930 Roy Fitzgerald was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. He also made a name for himself in sports, including as a mountaineer. In 1925 he climbed Mount Rainier in Washington state . Four years later, in bad weather, he swam across the Bosporus in 30 minutes. For over 50 years he was a director of the Merchants National Bank & Trust Company in Dayton. He also served as President of the Montgomery County Historical Society for 22 years . Roy Fitzgerald died on November 16, 1962 in Dayton, where he was also buried. He had been a member of a Masonic lodge since 1902 .
