Joseph R. Cockerill

Joseph Randolph Cockerill (born January 2, 1818 in Loudoun County , Virginia , †  October 23, 1875 in West Union , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Cockerill attended public schools in his homeland. In 1837 he moved to Adams County , Ohio. For some time he taught as a teacher. In 1840 he was head of the district land survey. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1851, he began working in this profession in West Union. He was also employed by the Court of Appeal. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1853 and 1854 .

In the congressional election of 1856 , Cockerill was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the sixth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Jonas R. Emrie on March 4, 1857 . Until March 3, 1859, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

During the Civil War, Joseph Cockerill served in the Union Army . He made it to the colonel. Later he even received the rank of Brevet Brigadier General of the Volunteers. After that he practiced as a lawyer again. From 1868 to 1871 he was again a member of the House of Representatives from Ohio. He died on October 23, 1875 in West Union, where he was also buried.
