John F. Hunter
John Feeney Hunter (born October 19, 1896 in Ford City , Armstrong County , Pennsylvania , † December 19, 1957 in Alexandria , Virginia ) was an American politician . From 1937 to 1943 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .
Career
In 1907, John Hunter moved with his parents to Toledo , Ohio, where he attended public schools. After a subsequent law degree at St. John's University in Toledo and his admission to the bar in 1918, he began to work there in this profession. In 1918, he took part in the final phase of the First World War as a soldier in the US Army . Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In 1932, 1934, 1936, and 1938 he took part as a delegate at their regional party conventions in Ohio. In 1932 and 1936 he was a substitute delegate ("Alternate") to the respective Democratic National Conventions , at which Franklin D. Roosevelt was nominated as a presidential candidate. Hunter was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives in 1933 and 1934 ; from 1935 to 1936 he was a member of the State Senate .
In the 1936 congressional election , Hunter was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the ninth constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded the late Warren J. Duffey on January 3, 1937 . Re-elected twice, he completed three legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1943 . By 1941, the last of the Federal Government's New Deal laws were passed there under President Roosevelt. From 1941, the work of the Congress was also shaped by the events of World War II .
In 1942, John Hunter was not re-elected. After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer in Toledo and Washington. In 1944, he tried unsuccessfully to return to the US House of Representatives. He died in Alexandria on December 19, 1957 and was buried in Toledo.
