Ralph Straus Regula (born December 3, 1924 in Beach City , Stark County , Ohio - † July 19, 2017 in Bethlehem Township , Ohio) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 2009 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ralph Regula served in the US Navy from 1944 to 1946 during World War II . He then graduated from Mount Union College in Alliance until 1948 . After a subsequent law degree at the William McKinley School of Law in Canton and his admission as a lawyer in 1952, he began to work in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Republican Party . Between 1960 and 1964 he was a member of the Ohio State Education Committee; in 1965 and 1966 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives . After that he sat from 1967 to 1972 inState Senate . In August 1972, he took part as a delegate at the Republican National Convention in Miami Beach , on which President Richard Nixon was nominated for re-election.

In the 1972 congressional election , Regula was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 16th constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded Frank T. Bow on January 3, 1973 . After 17 re-elections, he was able to complete a total of 18 legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 2009 . This made him the longest-serving Republican Congressman after Bill Young from Florida during his last term in office. His long time in parliament included the Watergate affair in 1974 and the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan . He was intermittently a member of the Labor, Health, Services and Education subcommittee. Regula was also a driving force in the search for alternative energy sources. In 2008 he decided not to run again.

Ralph Regula and his wife Mary had three adult children and four grandchildren.
