John L. Vance

John Luther Vance (born July 19, 1839 in Gallipolis , Ohio , †  June 10, 1921 there ) was an American politician . Between 1875 and 1877 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Vance attended public schools in his home country and then the Gallia Academy . After studying law at the Cincinnati Law School , he was admitted to the bar in 1861. Between April 1861 and December 1864 he served as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War . He rose to an infantry unit from West Virginia to lieutenant colonel. In 1867 he founded the Gallipolis Bulletin newspaper , which he also published. From 1870 he practiced as a lawyer in Gallipolis. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . In July 1872 he took part as a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Baltimore .

In the congressional election of 1874 Vance was elected to the Eleventh constituency of Ohio in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Hezekiah S. Bundy on March 4, 1875 . Since he was not confirmed in 1876, he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1877 . After serving in the US House of Representatives, John Vance returned to the newspaper industry. From about 1878 he was president of the Ohio River Improvement Association , which dealt with the development of the Ohio River as a waterway. He died on June 10, 1921 in Gallipolis, where he was also buried.
