Joseph Burns (born March 11, 1800 in Waynesboro , Virginia , †  May 12, 1875 in Coshocton , Ohio ) was an American politician . Between 1857 and 1859 he represented the state of Ohio in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1815 Joseph Burns came to New Philadelphia , Ohio, with his parents . A year later the family settled near Coshocton. He attended the public schools in his respective homeland and then worked in agriculture. At the same time he embarked on a political career. Between 1821 and 1838 he was the county government auditor in Coshocton County . He became a member of the Democratic Party . From 1838 to 1840 he was a member of the Ohio House of Representatives ; between 1843 and 1851 he held the office of County Clerk . In the state militia, he made it to major general.

In the congressional election of 1856 Burns was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 15th  constituency of Ohio , where he succeeded William R. Sapp on March 4, 1857 . Since he was not confirmed in 1858, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1859 . This was shaped by the events leading up to the civil war .

After serving in the US House of Representatives, Joseph Burns worked in the pharmacy business in Coshocton. He also served as a probate judge in Coshocton County. He died on May 12, 1875 in Coshocton, where he was buried.
